How long have you worked for Thornbridge/ how did you end up here?
I started working at Thornbridge in October 2018 coming over from the charity sector. I first heard of the brewery when I was studying Events Management and Tourism at Sheffield Hallam University I took on a part time job at The Greystones, one of Thornbridge’s pubs in Sheffield. I spent around 18 months there, learning to love beer, as well as serve all the regulars. Once I graduated and managed to secure a full time job. I stayed in touch with the team and ended up working at Peakender 2017 and 2018. After a manic time in 2018, I was lucky enough to be offered a job. I’ve been here just over 6 months but it doesn’t feel like it!
What do you like about working at Thornbridge?
I love the fact that I’m out and about so much! A lot of jobs are 9-5, Monday to Friday, but not mine! Some people would hate that but I actually couldn’t think of anything worse than not leaving my desk for days on end. The opportunities are endless and I’m proud to say I’m part of the process to get there. I also get to work with such a great team of people. Everyone is so supportive and there is always someone there to help, even if I do ask 101 questions a day, I never felt like the new person which was a bonus.
Favourite Thornbridge beer and why?
Tzara, when I started working at the Greystones, I’d only really drink Gin and Tonics, despite working on a bar for almost 6 years, at this point I thought I didn’t like beer. Looking back, I think how silly I was!
Tzara was the first beer I tried and actually liked, from there on I carried on trying different beers and I can probably say I’ve nearly tried all of the current Thornbridge range.
Favourite thing to do outside of work?
To see my friends. I’m so lucky to have friends in Sheffield and further afield. I’ve just booked to go camping with some of them which means plenty of beer and wine, BBQs and walks in the country side. Anything like that, I’m there! I don’t tend to sit still for long...
In the spirit of International women’s day who is your Female hero?
This is a tough one...I could say a historical figure or even my mum, all of whom inspire me constantly and in different ways.
Someone who has inspired me within my career is a previous manager of mine as well as a friend. When I met her 4 years ago, she was a woman within the music industry and was making sure she was heard. Like women in beer, it’s not the easiest sector to crack but she did it and has been honoured since. Her dedication and drive along with the positivity she had inspires me daily to be more like her and hope I’m as successful as her in years to come.
The theme for International Women’s day this year is ‘Balance for Better’, all about creating a gender balanced world, how will you create a balance for better?
I’ll always challenge stereotypes and will always speak out against them. Nothing worse than someone judging you on your gender! If I want to drink a beer, I shouldn’t be told “that’s not a girls drink” things have definitely got better since I started working in pubs so hopefully it continues that way!
