We are supporting the #CANCELTHECURFEW campaign and along with each of our pubs, we have written to our local MP’s to ask for their support. We would urge you to do the same to support our Industry.
If you’d like to support the campaign you can find your MP and a template letter here.
We have sent the below to Sarah Dines, MP for Derbyshire Dales:
We are writing to you as local constituents to support the #CancelTheCurfew campaign calling for an end to the detrimental and illogical 10pm curfew and make representations to the Chancellor for sector-specific support for night- time businesses on the brink of collapse.
We are concerned that an estimated 700,000 jobs are at risk of redundancy across the sector, which pre-covid contributed £66 billion a year to the UK economy. This will be devastating for our economy and for the thousands of employees and freelancers who will lose their main source of income. It is also clear that The Chancellor’s Winter Economy Plan offers no support to these individuals or businesses in the industry.
The Government has chosen to only support ‘viable’ businesses with its Winter Economy Plan, whilst appearing to systematically target this sector by imposing new, unreasonable restrictions that make businesses in the sector unable to generate revenue.
Most of the night-time economy is under enforced closure with 72% unable to open or trade. The minority of businesses that can open, having spent tens of thousands on creating Covid safe environments or ‘repurposing’, are now not able to operate sustainably due to new restrictions, such as the ill-advised and counterproductive curfew. There is no logic or scientific basis for this 10pm curfew when the science has shown that most transmission of Covid-19 is in households.
Without sector-specific support, or the ability to open on a safe and sustainable basis, the night-time industries are facing oblivion for no gain in public safety and health. This will lead many much loved cultural and entertainment institutions to close their doors forever.
We would be so grateful if you could meet with us and representatives of the Night-Time Industries Association and the wider sector representatives to discuss these critical issues, back the call for Government to #CanceltheCurfew and write to the Chancellor to call for urgent sector-specific financial support to keep this vibrant and creative industry alive, and avoid mass unemployment in the sector.
