History in the Making: Thornbridge Brewery and Garrett Oliver Unite for a Landmark Brew Supporting The MJF
Share
At Thornbridge Brewery, we’ve always believed in blending heritage with innovation, and our latest release is no exception. We’re thrilled to announce a one-of-a-kind collaboration with Garrett Oliver, Brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery and one of the most respected voices in modern brewing. Together, we’ve crafted a very special beer, brewed on the only operational Burton Union set in the world—and it’s all in support of The Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing and Distilling (MJF).
Reviving a Brewing Legend
In 2024, Garrett played a crucial role in helping us rescue and restore a historic Burton Union set—an iconic piece of brewing heritage that once defined the character of British ales. Now fully operational at our Bakewell brewery, this intricate fermentation system stands alone as the last of its kind still in use.
Since its revival, we’ve been exploring traditional brewing techniques and heritage styles through the Union, but this marks a particularly special moment: the first beer brewed on the system with Garrett Oliver himself.
The Beer: A Bold Take on a Classic Style
For this release, we’ve created a Strong Dark Mild—an underappreciated yet richly rewarding British style. Crafted with Maris Otter, premium Crystal and Chocolate malts, and a touch of ancient West African Fonio grain, the beer boasts a creamy body with delicate fruit notes. Dark brewing sugars deepen the flavour profile, adding caramelised complexity and a satisfying richness.
It’s a beer that bridges continents, brewing cultures, and generations of tradition.
Brewing for a Cause
Beyond the beer itself, this collaboration carries a purpose close to Garrett’s heart. He is the founder of The Michael James Jackson Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to funding technical education and career advancement for people of colour in the brewing and distilling industries.
With every pint and can sold, 10 pence will be donated directly to The MJF—supporting a more diverse and inclusive future for our craft.
“We were incredibly excited to brew with Garrett using the Union,” said Simon Webster, Co-Founder and CEO of Thornbridge. “To combine this brewing milestone with the opportunity to support such an important cause makes it all the more meaningful.”
Garrett Oliver added:
“I’m 36 years into my brewing career, and yet this still counts as one of the most personally significant beers I’ve had the opportunity to brew. My journey into brewing started with British cask beers at the pub, and to brew on this singular and wondrous beast is a great privilege.”
Where to Find It
This limited-edition beer will be available in Thornbridge bars and selected Free Trade pubs across the UK. It’s more than just a beer—it’s a celebration of brewing history, craftsmanship, and meaningful progress.
