India Pale Ales — Brewed Without Compromise
Thornbridge has been brewing IPAs since the very beginning. When we launched Jaipur in 2005 — loaded with American hops at a time when that was genuinely revolutionary — we didn't know it would go on to be cited as the UK's first craft IPA and change the face of British brewing. We just knew it tasted extraordinary.
Over twenty years on, IPAs remain the heart of what we do. From Jaipur's iconic citrus and tropical character to the hazy sessionability of Green Mountain and AM:PM, the tropical exuberance of Everybody Good Time, the imperial intensity of Halcyon, and the Burton Union-fermented complexity The Union — our IPA range covers the full spectrum of the style. Beyond the core range, our brewers regularly push the boundaries with seasonal and limited releases, so there's always something new worth seeking out.
Every IPA we brew starts with the finest ingredients. We use a plethora of hops including American hop varieties — Citra, Centennial, Chinook, Ahtanum, Simcoe — chosen for their aroma, flavour and that distinctive bitter finish that defines a great IPA. Our malt base is Low Colour Maris Otter from Norfolk, keeping the body light and letting the hops do the talking.
Whether you're buying your first craft IPA or you've been drinking Jaipur since day one, our range has something worth seeking out. Buy single cans to explore the range, or stock up with a case of our best sellers. Better still, build your own mixed case and make it exactly what you want.
Award-winning IPAs, brewed in Bakewell, Derbyshire. Available to buy online with free delivery on orders over £40.
FAQs on IPAs
What is an IPA?
IPA stands for India Pale Ale — a hop-forward beer style defined by its pronounced bitterness, aroma and flavour. Modern IPAs range from sessionable and hazy to bold West Coast and imperial styles, all united by their emphasis on hops
What was the UK's first craft IPA?
Jaipur, brewed by Thornbridge Brewery in Bakewell, Derbyshire, is widely cited as the UK's first craft IPA. Launched in 2005, it was brewed with an audacious amount of American hops at a time when that was genuinely revolutionary in British brewing.
What hops are used in Thornbridge IPAs?
It depends on the beer but Thornbridge use a varieties, including American hop varieties across its IPA range including Citra, Centennial, Chinook, Ahtanum, Simcoe and Cascade — chosen for their aroma, citrus and tropical flavour characteristics.
What is Jaipur IPA?
Jaipur is Thornbridge's flagship IPA, brewed at 5.9% ABV since 2005. It's characterised by citrus and tropical fruit aromas, a light malt base of Low Colour Maris Otter, and an enticing bitter finish. It's consistently rated one of the best IPAs in the UK.
What is the difference between a session IPA and an imperial IPA?
A session IPA is typically brewed at under 4.5% ABV, designed to be lower in alcohol while retaining hop character — Green Mountain and AM:PM are good examples. An imperial IPA (also called a double IPA) is brewed at higher strength, typically 7.5% ABV and above, with more intense hop and malt character — Halcyon is Thornbridge's imperial IPA.
Can I buy Thornbridge IPAs online?
